What if the inner critic is not the problem?
Most people have not one, but several inner voices living inside their heads.
A committee of assholes, living rent-free inside their heads.
The ones telling you you're lazy.
Difficult.
Ungrateful.
Behind.
Too much.
Not enough.
Our relationship with these voices is complicated.
You might even feel grateful about some of them, thinking that, without them, you would not have pushed yourself at all.
You might hate others, because you think they are the reason you still cannot get your shit together.
Everyone wants to silence the assholes that make you feel like a loser, and gain control over the ones that (allegedly) light the fire in you to get shit done.
After decades of dealing with my own committee, I have found that neither approach works.
Everything I am doing on this website is about helping other people with this issue.
The problem is not that the voices are there.
The problem is hiding under the reasons why they showed up in the first place.
You didn't wake up one day and decide to stop trusting yourself.
You learned.
You learned which parts of you got rewarded.
Which parts got ignored.
Which parts got called selfish, lazy, difficult, dramatic, ungrateful, too much, not enough.
So you did what humans do.
You adapted.
You got really good at wanting what earned approval and really bad at recognizing what you wanted in the first place.
Eventually, the part of you that gives zero fucks about all of this had to go into hiding.
But that doesn't mean that it is gone forever.
The parts of you that already know what they want are still there, and they won't stop trying to call your attention.
Before you spend another year trying to fix yourself...
Ask yourself a different question.
What if the assholes aren't lying?
What if they're just making sense of the evidence with the wrong story?
You've probably been told your problem is:
Impostor syndrome.
Self-sabotage.
Fear of success.
A mindset issue.
A confidence issue.
Maybe.
Or maybe those are just terrible explanations for a pattern nobody has taught you how to read.
What if your procrastination isn't laziness?
What if your burnout isn't weakness?
What if your constant questioning isn't proof you're unable to commit?
What if this whole mess is simply the result of years spent trying to become someone you were never designed to be?
